Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side in her early years due to her aunt Denise. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Even though DuVernay was raised within Compton with her family, she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer and was in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. While she was still a student DuVernay became interested in producing for television journalism. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste belonging to one of juries. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
